When going on your first driving holiday through France, travel at your own pace, with stops in picturesque villages and historic towns to experience the local French food and staying in family run guest houses or hotels can just add more excitement for the entire vacation experience.

When touring by car obviously means that you need places to live and there are so many different options to choose from, but it may be a good way to get into in the heart of the country and experience a true traditional France whilst on your driving vacation.

The roads are very well maintained, especially on toll roads that have fantastic lay-bys and service areas are also of excellent quality, which makes the experience when traveling through a whole lot easier. And even when they arrive in the local villages, roads are still very good quality, much better than some other countries we have been, but just remember that you will run on the right side of the road!

But when you are driving through France there are a few things you should be aware of.

Did you know that the legal age to drive in France is 18 years, and even if you have a full license from another country and you are under that age, you are still not allowed to drive in France? And all passengers must wear a seatbelt, and it is illegal for a child under 10 years being on the chair.

You must always stop at a zebra crossing, enforced by law and when passing through a city you will find a lot of them, but you must be very careful when you are a pedestrian, as the French do not seem to obey this rule as much as they should!

Watch your speed! If you are stopped for speeding you can be fine on the spot and the fines must be paid in cash, then that can be quite expensive. If you can not pay, or you're traveling more than 25 km / h over the speed limit, so your car can be seized and you may end up with a very large fine or even lose your license, so be careful, especially when on the toll roads that you do not want your driving holiday to come to an abrupt end!

The motorways is 130 kph, but it is reduced in bad weather down to 110 kph and duel carriageways and main roads the same rules apply where the speed limit is lower in bad weather. A duel carriageway is 110 km per hour and main roads is 90 km / h, with the periphery is 80 km / h and towns or minor roads are more than 50 km per hour.

The French government has published details of exactly where speed traps are located and it is one of the reasons why it is illegal to have a radar detector mounted on the car. Even with the volume of the satellite navigation systems available such as TomTom, you will discover that many have a warning for speeding cameras, but it is also illegal to have this facility on, otherwise you may end up with a hefty fine if you are caught out!

In bad weather, fog, etc. even during the day, it is mandatory to use your lights, but you do not keep your lights on during the day at any other time.

Of course You have deflectors fitted to your light if you have a right hand drive car and by law you must have a set of replacement bulbs and a warning triangle with you at all times. But it is always advisable, to check the rules before your holiday in France when they change from time to time and a good place to get access to this information is AA website.

You must also have a first aid kit and a fire extinguisher with you and because French law states that if you are the first on the scene of an accident, stop and give assistance, they can be use! And in the event of an accident you should call the police, which is done by dialing 17, and they will also dispatch an ambulance or fire brigade if they are also needed.

You will no doubt come across the term La Set priorities à Droite, which basically means that the vehicle entering a road has priority from the right. This is another case where a minor road goes into a main road, so be careful, especially in towns and villages which you will have to give way, even if it's you on the highway.

Officially this rule no longer applies unless it is clearly signposted yet it still causes confusion and in Paris it is still widespread. So you may end up feeling that you are being cut up, although this may have been how the French learned to run when Set priorities à Droite rule was still prevalent!

But by generally planning your holiday prior to travel, this will give you more peace of mind and will help you find all the tourist attractions you want to visit while on your holiday in France. Also when it comes to shopping, most places shut for at least two hours each day, and most supermarkets, etc. are not open on a Sunday, whereas museums and other attractions. so you can make general plans for your entire trip

But with these few general rules out of the way, just enjoy the experience, the beautiful scenery, the French wine and food and have a great family vacation while your driving holiday in France.
